Digital Marketing Glossary.
Based in Northwest Ohio, we serve local market leaders, as well as high-performing enterprises nationwide.
Know the exact jargon sales reps throw around when they need to cover up a lack of real pipeline growth.
No Sales Pitches Hidden Behind Heavy Marketing Vocabulary.
We sell revenue assets, not buzzwords. Keep this guide handy when other firms try to sell you on complex acronyms instead of bottom-line results.
If you’ve ever looked at a marketing proposal, an agency audit report, or your Google Analytics dashboard and felt like you were reading a foreign language, you aren't alone. Traditional agencies often use technical jargon and industry acronyms to confuse business owners, hide poor performance, and justify monthly retainers.
We believe in total transparency. We built this comprehensive glossary to translate digital marketing, local SEO, and technical website terminology into plain, revenue-focused English. Use this guide to educate yourself, protect your business from predatory agencies, and understand what it actually takes to rank on Google.

Essential SEO Acronyms (The Alphabet Soup)
ALT Text (Alternative Text)
A brief text description added to an image’s code on a webpage. ALT text helps screen readers describe images to visually impaired visitors and tells search engine crawlers what the image depicts. Optimizing ALT text with relevant keywords improves image search rankings and ensures ADA accessibility compliance.
API (Application Programming Interface)
A software bridge that allows two different applications to talk to each other and share data automatically. For example, an API allows your website’s contact form to instantly send lead information into your CRM or Google Sheets without manual data entry.
CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)
The total financial cost required to acquire a single new paying customer. CAC is calculated by adding all marketing spend, ad costs, and sales overhead over a specific period and dividing it by the number of new customers acquired. Lowering your CAC while maintaining lead quality is a primary goal of direct response marketing.
CMS (Content Management System)
A software platform that allows business owners to build, edit, and manage website content without needing to write code from scratch. Popular CMS platforms include Snapps.ai, Webflow, WordPress, and Shopify.
CPA (Cost Per Acquisition / Cost Per Action)
In paid advertising or lead generation, CPA measures how much money you spend to generate a specific action... such as a form submission, a phone call, or a booked consultation. Unlike CPC (Cost Per Click), CPA focuses on tangible prospect actions.
CPC (Cost Per Click)
The exact amount of money you pay every time a user clicks on one of your online advertisements (such as Google Search Ads or Facebook Ads). CPC varies wildly depending on industry competitiveness and keyword intent.
CPM (Cost Per Mille / Cost Per Thousand Impressions)
A billing metric used in online advertising where you pay a set rate for every 1,000 times your ad is displayed on a screen, regardless of whether anyone clicks on it. CPM is a common metric in interruption marketing campaigns.
CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization)
The strategic process of optimizing your website design, headline copy, intake forms, and call-to-action buttons to increase the percentage of website visitors who convert into paying leads or clients.
CTA (Call to Action)
A clear, explicit prompt on a webpage or ad that instructs the user on what step to take next. Examples include "Call for a Free Estimate," "Schedule Your Strategy Session," or "Fill Out Our Intake Form."
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
The percentage of people who see your search engine result or online ad and actually click on it. CTR is calculated by dividing total clicks by total impressions. High search result CTRs signal to Google that your page is relevant to searchers.
CX (Customer Experience)
The overall perception a customer forms about your business based on every interaction they have with your brand—from browsing your website and speaking to your sales team to receiving your final invoice.
E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness)
A core component of Google's search quality evaluator guidelines. Google uses E-E-A-T to determine whether a website’s content is written by qualified creators with real-world experience. Establishing strong E-E-A-T signals is essential for ranking highly in competitive niches.
NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number)
The core business identification information published across the web. Maintaining 100% NAP consistency across your website, Google Business Profile, social media pages, and online directories is a critical ranking factor for local SEO.
PPC (Pay-Per-Click)
A digital advertising model where advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Google Search Ads are the most common form of PPC advertising.
ROI (Return on Investment)
The ultimate measure of marketing effectiveness. ROI calculates the net profit generated from your marketing efforts relative to the total money invested.
SaaS (Software as a Service)
Cloud-based software applications licensed on a monthly or annual subscription basis. Examples include email marketing platforms, CRMs, and website hosting services.
SERP (Search Engine Result Page)
The actual page displayed by Google, Bing, or Yahoo after a user submits a search query. A typical SERP includes sponsored ads, local map packs, organic listings, video features, and People Also Ask modules.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
The specific web address used to locate a unique webpage on the internet (e.g., [https://yourwebsite.com/services](https://yourwebsite.com/services)).
UX / UI (User Experience / User Interface)
UI (User Interface): The visual design, layout, buttons, and aesthetic elements of a website.
UX (User Experience): How easy, intuitive, and satisfying it is for a real human to navigate that interface and accomplish their goal.
Local SEO & Google Maps Terms
Citation
Any online mention of your business’s NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) on another website, local business directory, or mapping database (such as Yelp, YellowPages, Apple Maps, or Chamber of Commerce sites). Citations help search engines verify your physical business location.
Geographic Radius
The specific physical distance surrounding your business or shop location where your Google Business Profile appears prominently in local map searches. Strategic local SEO extends your geographic radius into surrounding cities and counties.
Google Business Profile (GBP)
Formerly known as Google My Business (GMB), this is your official business listing hosted on Google. Your GBP powers your appearance in Google Maps and local map pack results, displaying your reviews, operating hours, photos, and phone number.
Google Business Profile Optimization
The ongoing practice of refining your GBP listing by choosing the correct primary and secondary business categories, adding high-resolution geotagged photos, collecting positive customer reviews, posting updates, and ensuring accurate service area parameters.
Google Map Pack (The "Local 3-Pack")
The highly visible block of three local business listings that Google displays at the top of organic search results for location-based searches (e.g., "roofer near me" or "plumber Toledo OH"). Securing a position in the map pack drives the highest volume of commercial phone calls for local service businesses.
Geotargeting
The practice of delivering location-specific content, landing pages, or advertisements to website visitors based on their physical GPS location or IP address.
Local Keyword
A search phrase that includes a specific geographic location modifier (e.g., "commercial construction company Napoleon Ohio"). Local keywords carry high commercial intent because searchers are actively looking for local providers.
Localized Schema Markup
Structured code embedded in a website’s backend that explicitly provides search engines with your exact latitude/longitude coordinates, physical address, operating hours, accepted payment methods, and local service boundaries.
Review Velocity
The speed and consistency with which a business receives new online customer reviews. A steady stream of genuine 5-star reviews over time signals to Google that your business is active, reliable, and worthy of top local rankings.
Service Area Business (SAB)
A business that meets customers at their locations (e.g., mobile mechanics, contractors, roofers, HVAC techs) rather than serving them at a brick-and-mortar storefront. SABs can hide their physical home or office address on Google Maps while defining specific geographic operating boundaries.
Technical SEO & Website Mechanics
Backlink (Inbound Link)
A hyperlink on another website that points back to your website. Search engines treat backlinks as votes of confidence. High-authority, industry-relevant backlinks boost your site’s domain authority, while spammy backlinks can harm your rankings.
Bounce Rate
The percentage of website visitors who land on one of your pages and leave immediately without clicking any other links or taking action. A high bounce rate often indicates slow page loading speeds, poor design, or irrelevant content.
Canonical Tag
A hidden tag in a webpage’s HTML code that tells search engines which version of a page is the master copy. This prevents duplicate content issues when similar content appears on multiple URLs.
Crawling
The automated process where search engine bots (often called "spiders" or "crawlers") scan the code and content of websites to discover new pages, read updates, and analyze technical structure.
Domain Authority (DA)
A logarithmic scoring metric developed by SEO software companies (predicting how well a website will rank on search engine result pages). Domain authority is influenced heavily by the quantity and quality of inbound backlinks pointing to your site.
Duplicate Content
Significant blocks of content on a website that completely match content on other pages of your site or on external websites. Unintentional duplicate content confuses search crawlers and dilutes ranking power.
Indexing
The process by which Google processes and stores the information discovered during crawling in its massive search database. If a page is not indexed, it cannot appear in search engine results.
Internal Linking
Hyperlinks that connect one page on your website to another page on the exact same domain. Strategic internal linking establishes a logical site structure, distributes backlink equity across your pages, and guides visitors to high-converting service landing pages.
JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data)
The preferred coding format recommended by Google for implementing structured data (schema markup) on websites.
Keyword Cannibalization
A technical SEO issue that occurs when multiple pages on your website target the exact same keyword or search intent. This causes your own pages to compete against each other in search results, lowering the ranking power of both.
Keyword Density
The percentage of times a specific keyword or phrase appears on a webpage relative to the total word count on that page. Overusing keywords to manipulate search rankings is called "keyword stuffing" and leads to search penalties.
Lazy Loading
A web performance technique that delays the loading of images, videos, and heavy scripts until the user scrolls down to where those elements actually appear on the screen. Lazy loading speeds up initial page load times significantly.
Long-Tail Keyword
A specific, multi-word search phrase (usually 3 to 5+ words) used by searchers who know exactly what they are looking for (e.g., "emergency residential roof leak repair in Toledo"). While long-tail keywords have lower overall search volume, they feature significantly higher conversion rates.
Meta Description
A concise summary (typically 150–160 characters) embedded in a page’s backend code that appears below the page title in Google search results. A compelling meta description increases your click-through rate (CTR).
Meta Title Tag
An HTML element that defines the official title of a webpage. The title tag appears as the clickable blue headline in search engine results and in the top tab of web browsers. Title tags are one of the most important on-page SEO ranking factors.
Mobile-First Indexing
Google's primary indexing method, which evaluates the mobile version of your website’s code, content, and layout to determine your search rankings—even for desktop search results.
Organic Traffic
Visitors who land on your website by clicking on a natural, non-paid search result on Google, Bing, or Yahoo.
Orphan Page
A page on your website that has zero internal links pointing to it from other pages on your domain. Orphan pages are difficult for search engine spiders to discover and index.
Redirect (301 vs. 302)
301 Redirect: A permanent redirection from one URL to another. It transfers virtually all search engine ranking power and backlink equity to the new address.
302 Redirect: A temporary redirection that tells search engines to keep indexing the original URL.
Robots.txt
A plain text file placed in your website’s root directory that provides instructions to search engine web crawlers about which pages or folders they are allowed or forbidden to crawl.
Schema Markup (Structured Data)
A standardized code vocabulary added to your website that translates your content into explicit data that search engine algorithms can read instantly. Schema markup powers rich search features like star ratings, review counts, FAQ drop-downs, and business addresses.
Search Intent
The underlying goal or reason why a user types a specific query into a search engine. Search intent generally falls into four categories:
Transactional: Ready to buy now ("buy metal roofing supplies online").
Commercial: Investigating options ("best commercial general contractors near me").
Informational: Looking for answers ("how to fix a leaking garage door").
Navigational: Looking for a specific brand or site ("Twenty-Two Designs contact page").
Site Speed / Page Speed
The time it takes for a webpage to completely load its code, media assets, and interactive elements on a desktop or mobile device. Slow page speeds hurt user experience, increase bounce rates, and negatively impact search rankings.
XML Sitemap
A structured, machine-readable file hosted on your website that lists every important URL you want search engines to crawl and index.
Website Accessibility & Digital Compliance
Accessibility Overlay
A third-party automated widget or plugin installed on a website that claims to instantly fix accessibility issues for disabled users. Search engines and digital accessibility experts heavily criticize overlays because they fail to fix underlying code issues and do not satisfy legal accessibility standards.
ADA Title III Compliance
The section of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in places of public accommodation. Federal courts increasingly rule that commercial websites are places of public accommodation, making web accessibility a legal requirement for businesses.
ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications)
A set of specialized HTML attributes that define ways to make web content and web applications more accessible to people with disabilities, particularly those using screen readers.
Color Contrast Ratio
The numerical difference in light intensity between foreground text and its background color. Maintaining proper color contrast ratios (typically at least 4.5:1 for standard text) ensures readability for users with low vision or color blindness.
Screen Reader
An assistive software program used by blind or visually impaired individuals that converts on-screen text, buttons, and visual elements into synthetic speech or Braille output. Examples include NVDA, JAWS, and Apple VoiceOver.
Switch Device
An assistive hardware device (such as a single button, foot pedal, or sip-and-puff switch) used by individuals with severe motor mobility impairments to operate computers and navigate websites without a mouse or standard keyboard.
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)
The internationally recognized benchmark standards for digital accessibility, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG guidelines are broken into three levels of conformance: A, AA, and AAA. Level AA is the standard legal benchmark for commercial websites.
Direct Response, Sales & Revenue Terms
Buyer Intent
A metric evaluating how close a prospective customer is to making a purchase decision based on their online actions, search queries, and content interactions.
Conversion Rate
The percentage of total website visitors who complete a desired business goal—such as filling out a contact form, calling your shop, downloading a resource, or making a purchase.
Direct Response Marketing
A high-ROI marketing methodology designed to generate an immediate, trackable response or action from prospects (such as calling a phone number or requesting a quote) rather than spending money on passive brand awareness.
Interruption Marketing
Marketing tactics that force ads in front of people who are in the middle of doing something else (e.g., social media feed ads, billboards, TV commercials, pop-up ads). Interruption tactics generally yield lower lead intent than search marketing.
Lead Magnet
A valuable free resource (such as a downloadable guide, workbook, checklist, or video audit) offered to website visitors in exchange for their name, email address, and phone number.
Lead Nurturing
The automated and manual process of building relationships with prospective buyers who aren't ready to purchase immediately, guiding them through your sales funnel with targeted content and follow-ups.
Sales Pipeline
A visual, structured representation of where every prospective customer sits in your sales process—from initial lead inquiry to completed consultation, contract signature, and final invoice.
Tire-Kicker
A colloquial term for low-quality leads who consume your sales team's time asking questions and requesting estimates without having the actual intention, budget, or authority to buy your services.
Vanity Metrics
Superficial performance metrics—such as raw ad impressions, social media likes, pageviews, or software scorecards—that look impressive on marketing reports but bear zero correlation to actual closed sales or bankable profit.
Clear Answers Bring Better Results
Understanding these core terms equips you to make smarter, data-driven decisions for your business. When you know what questions to ask and what metrics actually matter, you can protect your operating budget, hold your vendors accountable, and build an online presence engineered for long-term revenue growth.
